5 Shows to Watch This Spring

February 20th, 2015

1. Boardwalk Empire (HBO, Sept. 7)

Once positioned as the heir apparent to The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire has never quite managed to match the quality or acclaim of that legendary series — but it has carved out a quality niche of its own. Picking up after last year’s tragic, gruesome season finale, this final season follows Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) as he continues to build a criminal empire in 1920s Atlantic City. Read more

Why Game of Thrones fans shouldn’t get to excited about Season 5

August 9th, 2014

george-630x744It’s long been rumored that Season 5 of GoT will likely be a downer compared to others, and when you consider that not only has author George RR Martin explicitly stated he spent the least time on those books, it’s now being reported that he won’t write any of the individual episodes for HBO’s series as well.

WinterIsComing.Net has reported that the famous scribe will be setting aside a little more time to work on the next installment of his book series, ‘The Winds of Winter’. He revealed yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con that for the first time, he will not be writing an episode of Game of Thrones for the upcoming season. Read more

March 26th, 2014

game of thrones hbo season 4 premiere

Very few TV shows make it to a point to where they become their own cultural movement. HBO’s Game of Thrones has accomplished just that. Pulling in an already quite high three million viewers on its debut in 2011, the show has grown to the most downloaded (over six million people downloaded the Season 3 Finale) and one of the most watched on the planet. Girls #10: All the World’s a Stage

HBO’s ‘Girls’ Episode 8 Review: So Here We Are

February 24th, 2014

HBO Girls Episode 8 episode review

So here we are. Episode 8. I didn’t learn the dance from last week and I am still wondering why I am watching a bunch of women being terrible to each other. I was lured in with promises of witty jokes and the unfulfilled hopes of seeing Patrick Wilson shirtless for 30 minutes again. Alas, no Patrick Wilson and few witty jokes. Read more

HBO’s ‘Girls’ Episode 7 Recap: On Healing and the Cruel Drunk

February 17th, 2014

Girls Episode 7 Season 3 reviewThe opening of this episode solidified my theory that Marnie is the Lady Mary of Girls. The peonies. The sweeping shots of a Hamptons (okay it’s North Fork, not the Hamptons) estate. The Downton Abbey-esque music! Complete Lady Mary.

It just so happens that this episode coincides with a few recent articles about Marnie and “Pretty Girl Privilege,” the theory that certain women that are more conventionally beautiful than other women are not usually faced with serious issues because other people fix the problems for them. Problems like, being a terrible person or being kicked out of the New York City apartment that you share with your (now) ex-boyfriend and having to pay for a new apartment. When pretty fades, as it inevitably does, and these women are faced with real issues they completely freak out. Marnie is freaking out. Read more
