The NFL released its 2014 schedule Wednesday night, confirming the dates and locations of all 256 matchups (and ending your chance to enter the St. Louis Rams’ schedule-guessing contest, even though you had no chance of winning). With the slate solidified, you can probably expect to see more of the standard strength-of-schedule analysis that averages the 2013 winning percentages of a team’s opponents. Unfortunately, those numbers aren’t especially useful, because they assume each team will be exactly as good in 2014 as it was in 2013; in reality, NFL teams vary quite a bit from season to season, and our ability to predict which ones will and won’t be good in a given year is extremely limited. The SEC Network, set to launch on Aug. 14, and ESPN have reached an agreement with Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks to carry the network, it was announced Thursday.
“We know we have customers who want the SEC-ESPN Network, and are pleased to bring it to them,” said Andrew Rosenberg, Senior Vice President of Content Acquisition for Time Warner Cable. “This deal will help ensure that fans and alumni of SEC universities won’t miss any important games.” Read more

Bucking the standard of signing lucrative, long-term contracts, NBA players are now agreeing to shorter deals in the hopes of cashing in on the league’s expected influx of television revenue in 2016.
It’s a recent trend that started at the very top of the league. Four-time league MVP LeBron James agreed to a two-year, $42 million contract in his return with the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier this week, and reportedly intends to sign a new, long-term deal with the team in 2016. James could have signed a four-year deal in excess of $80 million, but clearly was looking further down the road. Read more

A recent blog at The Hill covered the growing concerns over net neutrality and the ability of politicians and lawmakers to control, or keep others from controlling, who can and cannot access what services over the internet. As the web quickly becomes an avenue for every day and necessary government and pubic services, such as health care and taxes, the issue of net neutrality and web access is no longe simply an issue of entertainment or consumerism. ESPN’s telecast of Wednesday’s Netherlands vs. Argentina FIFA World Cup semifinal match – a 0-0 tie in which Argentina advanced to the Final past Netherlands in a penalty kick shootout at Arena de Sao Paulo – ranks as the highest-rated and most-viewed World Cup semifinal match ever on any U.S. network, according to Nielsen. The match averaged a 4.3 U.S. household rating and 6,823,000 viewers on Dish Network and otherwise.

The World will be watching on Thursday as Brazil opens their first ever FIFA World Cup, and the first World Cup every held in South America. All games will be carried on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2, as well as other international channels. Thanks to the location being relatively similar to the East Coast, most game times are fairly reasonably for American fans, with my kick-offs scheduled for noon, 3:00PM, 4:00PM and 6:00PM Eastern Standard Time. Well it’s here, the final weekend in college basketball and the NCAA Tournament. What has been one of the crazier NCAA Tournaments in recent memory has actually produced mostly traditional programs for the final four teams and three games. UCONN, Florida and Kentucky have all won national championships since 2007, and Wisconsin is no slouch either. They games should be fantastic, and Vegas certainly agrees.
